Tomographic imaging is proving a useful tool for the Minerals Industry. Equipment has grown rapidly from the CAT scanners used in the medical field to X-ray micro-tomography equipment (XMT) with improved resolution presenting 3 D structural images. Electrical Tomography, which is image reconstruction from electrical excitation and measurements at perimeter electrodes using either impedance (EIT), resistance (ERT) or capacitance (ECT) techniques are proving to be useful techniques for non-invasive measurement of systems and for real time measurements.
These techniques are now being used in a variety of mineral processing and hydrometallurgy investigations. Uses have been real-time visualization of two phase flow in a pipe, concentration and velocity maps used in crystallization, precipitation and mixing process, 3D analysis of mineral grains and rock types and the validation of process models.
This exciting work is being carried out in a number of centres around the world. The SAIMM wishes through this symposium to present the work to the Southern African Minerals Industry. A selection of the leading researchers in the field has been assembled from overseas and locally. We are pleased to have Professor Richard Williams of Leeds University and a leading exponent in this field to open the symposium and lead the discussion.
